Histories of Performance II

Catalog description

This course provides a survey of dramatic literature, dramatic theory, and theater from around the globe. It will begin with the investigation of the diverse histories of live performance and how it has grown and developed as a discipline. Particular focus will be given to the concept of world theater traditions, artists, and topics such as: Japanese theater (Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku), Asian Theatre (Kathakali, Bharatanatyam), African Theater (with a focus on Soyinka and Msomi), Latino-American theater (Panic and others). There will also be a focus on the global history of the practice of collective creation, and the examination of seminal global theatrical ensembles, past and current.
