Catalog description

This course in an introduction to draping and patternmaking for costumes. It focuses on period costume for theatre. The student will pad a dress form to his or her body shape and make a basic sloper from muslin and transfer it to a paper pattern. Fabric swatching is an assignment in NYC garment district. A field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art will explore the 19th century paintings and portraits. Basic techniques in draping and patternmaking are introduced with a project that allows the student to use the skills learned in class to make a period costume.
