Writing for the Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre Writing is a comprehensive art form combining three elements: 1) Music—which consists of melodies, harmonies, accompaniment, orchestration, vocal arrangements, and more; 2) Lyrics—words written to be sung; and 3) Book—words written to be spoken, in addition to the creation and design of narrative and characters. In this course, students will engage in the creation of each component, work to seamlessly integrate them together, and explore the processes of pitching one’s ideas, expressing one’s taste, understanding the techniques behind effective musical storytelling, developing collaborative skills, rewriting first drafts, and presenting written material. PAGE 311 takes a special focus on collaboration in the musical theatre writing process. Students do not need prior experience writing music and/or lyrics. This class has been designated as writing-enhanced, a course in which writing and revision are central to learning content and achieving course goals. Course Campus:NY:Spring.
