Advanced Theory and Practice IV for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners

Catalog description

This course is the synthesis of the student’s progressive development in psychiatric/mental health care management across the lifespan. Students will demonstrate advanced competencies in applying an evidence-based, primary health care practice framework to the delivery of equitable, person-centered mental health care for diverse populations. Students will evaluate outcomes within the context of the patient and family. The didactic component of this course will focus on role development; psychotherapeutic screening, assessment, diagnosis, and management of psychiatric disorders and behavioral/mental health problems leading to appropriate neurobiological and psychological treatment; and use of psychotherapy and psychopharmacotherapeutics, which are integral for the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner’s practice. The clinical practicum allows students to apply assessment and intervention strategies to assist patients with the maintenance and restoration of their highest level of health. Emphasis is placed on the consistent application of knowledge and evidence to patient care and the teaching of patients, families, and staff. The student will develop a professional identity that supports transition to the role of the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner.
