Advanced Theory and Practice III for Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners

Catalog description

This course builds upon the student’s proficiency in psychiatric/mental health care management across the lifespan from Advanced Theory and Practice II. Using an evidence-based practice framework to implement equitable, person-centered, primary health care, the student will assess, diagnose, and manage psychiatric and mental health conditions in diverse populations. Students will evaluate outcomes within the context of the patient and family. The didactic component of this course will focus on psychotherapeutic screening, assessment, diagnosis, and management of psychiatric disorders and behavioral/mental health problems leading to appropriate neurobiological and psychological treatment and the use of psychotherapy and psychopharmacotherapeutics. The clinical practicum allows students to apply assessment and intervention strategies to assist patients with the maintenance and restoration of their highest level of health. Emphasis is placed on developing differential diagnoses and evidence-based, person-centered plans of care. The student will develop a professional identity that supports transition to the role of the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner.
