This course explores culturally responsive and intersectional approaches to counseling practice and research. Students will develop critical awareness of the impact of systemic oppression, privilege, and cultural context on client experiences, counselor identity, and research ethics. Emphasis will be placed on multicultural competencies, ethical advocacy and the integration of intersectionality across assessment, treatment, supervision, and research design (i.e., quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, methodological design, statistical and interpretive analysis, etc.). Through theory-to-practice integration, students will learn to translate multicultural and intersectional frameworks into actionable strategies within clinical and scholarly work. This includes applying culturally sustaining practices in case conceptualization, developing equity-informed treatment plans, and designing research that reflects the voices and lived experiences of historically marginalized populations. This course aims to help students explore how to challenge narratives in psychological research, adopt inclusive methodologies, and contribute to a more just and representative body of counseling knowledge. At the completion of this course, students will be equipped with tools to foster healing, empowerment, and systemic change through both their counseling relationships and scholarly contributions.
