Catalog description

This course will probe work by visual artists that examine the photographic archive and create new visual imagery and narrative with archival photograph collections within the historical landscape of media and communication. Through assignments, critiques, discussions, readings, and gallery and archive visits, students will learn about the power of a photograph to suggest and reveal an untold story. The students will explore imagery from family archives to institutional archives to create a final project that presents a creative photography collection that suggests alternative narratives for present times that emphasize visual communication about one or more of the following subject matter: environment, culture, race, identity, gender, and class.
