Environmental Law Seminar: Indigenous People's Treaty Rights

The first treaties that the William Penn (1662) and the USA (1778) made with any Indigenous Peoples anywhere were with the Lenape Nation, who lived where Pace University is today. This seminar studies what Lenape treaty obligations may still exist today, and how norms of Human Rights and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples apply to the treaties. From International Law, to local land use law, federal “Indian Law,” and broadly environmental law, this seminar challenges students to synthesize and restate the law relevant to the Lenape treaties. Students will each research and write a paper on a specific Lenape treaty. Papers can satisfy the Upper Level Writing Requirement. 2 credits. Limited to 12 participants. No prerequisites. Students interest in taking the seminar are invited to confer with Prof. Robinson before registering.
