Field Study in Italy

Catalog description
This one credit course will prepare the student for an intensive 11-day cultural excursion to Italy. The student will be given a required reading list that includes selections on Italian history, literature, art, and present-day social and political realities. The professor will meet the students twice before the Spring break trip in order to review and discuss the required reading material in preparation for the trip abroad. These readings and discussions will provide an academic backdrop that will certainly enhance the student’s cultural experience abroad. The itinerary includes the following cities in Italy: Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri; in Sicily, Taormina, Siracusa, Agrigento, Palermo, Piazza, Armerina, and Mt. Etna. The student will visit archeological sites, museums, theaters, restaurants and other places of cultural interest. There will be a third class meeting after the trip to discuss topics for the required 10-page research paper due at the end of the semester. After consultation with the professor, the student will select a topic of choice and write the paper in either Italian or English. Course conducted in English.
