River Semester Capstone

Catalog description

This course will be an intensive interdisciplinary learning environment that will integrate all facets of the River Semester curriculum. It will include out-of-class work, including field experiences and river trips, and at least two full-day immersion classes. The in-class work will include guest lectures, combined classes with other River Semester instructors, visits by Pace Academy mentors, and a special selection of readings. There will be an emphasis on the physical, chemical and biological functioning of the Hudson River and estuary as a foundation for understanding the complexities of the ecosystem, the human settlements that have grown around it, and the river's role in the development of New York and the nation. Students will be challenged to develop a command and synthesis of the varied aspects of the River Semester curriculum through vigorous participation, individual applied research, and a group project, which the class will design. All River Semester instructors will be invited to evaluate and advise student work as part of this capstone course. Restrictions/Requirements: Sophomore standing.
