History of New York City

Catalog description

This seminar course will provide an in-depth study of the history of the City of New York from precolonial beginnings through the latter twentieth century. The course will begin with a consideration of the indigenous world and examine the emergence of New Amsterdam through Dutch settlement, and the shift to English control. Other topics will include slavery, commercial development, political life, immigration, and urban planning and the changing cityscape. The course counts in the History Department's "Western Heritage American History" historical offerings for majors and minors, and also for the New York Studies minor.
