Catalog description

This course discusses the development of industrial consumer cultures in Europe since the late eighteenth century. Topics covered will include: proto-industrialization and the development of the factory system; changes in the retail distribution system; the impact of colonial products on the European market; the development of modern advertising and popular commercial recreations; and the role that consumer politics played in 20th century European political systems (e.g., against the backdrop of the Cold War). The readings discuss these topics within several European nations, including Germany, France, Britain, Russia, and Italy. Restrictions/Requirements: New Core: Fulfills 3 credits in Area of Knowledge II or 3 credits in Area of Knowledge V.
