The History of Native Peoples in the United States

This survey course will focus on the study of Native peoples in the area now identified as the United States to the 20th Century American Indian Movement. We will focus on the diverse cultural, political systems, and survival of various indigenous groups throughout European contact, the colonial period, and the United States. We will also be placing a special emphasis on the efforts of the United States towards assimilation, conflict, and detribalization. We will delve into Native American roles in various events of American history such as but not limited to the American Revolution, Civil War, and WWII. We will be also examining the concept of political relations with sovereign Native nations and groups. Students will utilize historical analysis and become engaged with primary and secondary sources and develop arguments that are based on historical evidence from various perspectives.
