Catalog description

This course examines theory and methods for teaching the performing arts in PreK-12 school settings. Candidates will learn to use music, dance and the theater arts for children’s personal and creative expression as well as for disciplinary-based learning. Course content considers the roles and responsibilities required for teaching-artists to be valued, contributing members of their school communities. In this regard, candidates will develop strong collaborative skills for working with classroom and specialist teachers and children’s families/caregivers. Throughout the course, inclusive classroom practices are learned so that all children, regardless of their abilities, sociocultural and linguistic backgrounds and abilities, will obtain personal satisfaction and appreciation with the performing arts for self-expression and learning. Candidates will study ways PreK-12 children can create, perform and respond to the performing arts with their social/cultural communities and school curricula. Course outcomes consist of planning lesson and learning units for the performing arts and demonstrating performing art lessons with peers for response and critique.
