Research/Theory in Developing Literacy

Catalog description

This foundation course focuses on research and theory regarding the processes of literacy development from the emergent to the proficient reader/writer in areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening, and viewing and representing visually. Theories of language and cognition are considered within historical/social contexts. Topics include the developmental nature of reading and writing, factors that affect literacy acquisition, the relation between oral language and literacy development, and the impact of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, cultural and linguistic differences, and brain research on literacy acquisition. The course focuses on the needs of a diverse population of students, including English language learners.
