Catalog description
This course introduces the student to the theory and multidisciplinary applications of speech science. The physiology of the speech mechanism and acoustics of speech perception and production will be the areas of focus. Small scale multidisciplinary research projects typically involve acoustic and perceptual analyses of speech samples; these may involve publicly available speech recordings or speech samples acquired by students. Acoustic analyses typically use freely available software. This course will be of interest to students in most disciplines that deal with human psychology and behavior, e.g., psychology, communication studies, anthropology, speech language pathology, political science, performing arts, business, finance, literature, etc.
