International Center for Photography: Portrait Photography

In this supervised practicum, students will have the chance to study with a professional photographer on the faculty of the International Center of Photography, one of the foremost professional photography schools in the United States. Students in this course are exposed to various mediums working with portraiture and the figure such as sculpture, painting and photography. The book "Glitch Feminism," by Legacy Russell is a main source of inspiration and reference as a lead to understanding identity, feminism, the “glitch”, the future and how that can inform how we look at and make images--specifically portraits. Students will push their understanding of portraits by using other mediums such as collage and painting to engage with the malleability of photography and the influence of texts to understand what it means to be human in our current climate and how to represent that in their own thoughtful way. This course takes place at the School of the International Center of Photography on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. In addition to attending all class sessions, students are required to complete a writing project about photographic practice under the supervision of the Pace ICP Coordinator.
