Beginner Trial Advocacy

Catalog description

This course builds on foundational principles of trial advocacy through structured, performance-based exercises. Students develop practical skills in case theory, theme development, and persuasive storytelling while applying rules of evidence in simulated courtroom settings. Instruction emphasizes direct and cross-examination of witnesses, introduction of exhibits and demonstratives, and effective use of objections and responses. Students practice delivering opening statements and closing arguments, conduct limited voir dire, and engage in motion practice, including motions in limine. Ethical considerations, cultural humility, and strategies to promote access to justice are integrated throughout. Designed for students with basic familiarity from R201, this course focuses on transitioning from theory to practice through live and recorded simulations.
