Catalog description

This course will introduce fundamental skills and vocabulary for reading, hearing, performing, analyzing, and writing music. Students will develop a solid understanding of musical basics, including notation, reading and writing in treble and bass clefs, intervals, keys, scales, triads, and seventh chords, as well as skills in basic melodic and formal analysis. The curriculum will cover an overview of diatonic harmony, an introduction to harmonic function, and tonicization. Musicianship skills will focus on interval and chord recognition, rhythmic and melodic dictation, and keyboard familiarity. Additionally, the course will offer hands on experience in proper techniques, music reading, and performance of elementary piano literature. Emphasis will be placed on listening skills, both with and without scores (including lead sheets, figured bass, and standard notation). No prerequisites are required.
