Catalog description

This course will introduce the students to a historical overview of the deaf community and its evolving culture. Students will gain an understanding of the effects of hearing loss by way of basic audiology, speech pathology, and the anatomy of the ear. Modeling theoretical frameworks from sociology, including social beliefs, physical proximity, and directness will be explored. Deafness as a culture, an identity, not a disability, will be explored though the idea that deafness is an identity, thus individuals with deafness do not have a disability and do not want to be fixed.
