Catalog description

The American Association of Community Colleges offers this definition: Service Learning combines community service with academic instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking and personal and civic responsibility. Service learning programs involve students in activities that address community-identified needs, while developing their academic skills and commitment to their community. This practicum course explores the connection between theory and practice by bringing together student service learning, academic readings and leadership experiences. Students will have opportunities to design their own service learning experience, or work with local organizations. Possible topics to address are: economic re-stabilization, social justice awareness, existing program development and/or revitalization, environmental activism, neighborhood revitalization, creativity in community, and fundraising/development. Students will work with faculty to create a project that is relevant to-enhancing their academic course of study and/or career choice. In class activities and discussion will focus on the political, systemic and policy questions that emerge out of the project work and we will use weekly readings, journal and reflection activities to ground the experience within the larger context of your academic work and career goals.
