This undergraduate course provides a deep dive into emergent literacy through the lens of the Science of Reading, an evidence-based framework that integrates cognitive, linguistic, and educational research. The course explores how children acquire foundational reading and writing skills from infancy through early childhood. Aligned with Ohio’s Science of Reading Audit Metrics, this course covers essential domains such as phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Students will examine the stages of literacy acquisition, and the neurological processes involved in learning to read. The course emphasizes practical strategies for fostering early literacy, equipping students with research-driven approaches to support diverse learners, including those with language differences or reading challenges. Through both theoretical study and practical application, students will develop the skills necessary to deliver explicit, systematic, and adaptive reading instruction that promotes literacy success across diverse educational settings.
