Examines the dictatorships of Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini. Invites students to understand and explain the defining features of authoritarian dictatorships and the specific characteristics of Nazism, Stalinism, and Italian Fascism. Analyzes World War I’s impact on European states and the circumstances that facilitated each man’s rise to power. Compares the tactics each leader used to dismantle democracy, limit democratic rights, and eliminate their opposition. Explores the experiences of individuals who lived in these regimes, with an emphasis on those who endured persecution.
