Surveys cultural adaptations of peoples of Africa, including discussions of human origins, early languages, subsistence patterns, and early civilizations. Addresses the Atlantic slave trade and European colonialism, analyzes roots of ethnic conflict, and examines public health issues. Explores ethnographic accounts of diverse peoples with attention the unique and creative strengths of African communities.
