Catalog description
This second course in a calculus-based physics sequence is designed for students in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, and other STEM fields. PHY 212 provides an in-depth exploration of electricity, magnetism, and wave phenomena, covering topics such as electric fields, electric potential, capacitance, and DC and AC circuit analysis. The course also examines magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction, and Maxwell's equations, leading into the study of electromagnetic waves and the nature of light. Calculus-based problem-solving is emphasized throughout, giving students a rigorous understanding of these essential principles. Laboratory sessions complement theoretical knowledge by providing hands-on experience in experimental physics, data collection, and analysis, preparing students to communicate scientific findings effectively. With three lecture hours and three laboratory hours per week, PHY 212 equips students with critical problem-solving abilities and the scientific rigor needed for advanced study in STEM fields. Prerequisite(s): PHY 211, MAT 162.
