An introduction to the scholarly study of the global history of sexuality. The main focus of the course is to develop an understanding of sexuality and gender in the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman worlds, Hebrew culture, early Christian communities, and the Early Modern and Modern periods regarding Africa, China, India and the West. It will explore the changing ways that individuals, moral authorities, the tribe/state and scientific experts have conceptualized sexuality and gender. Major events in the history of sexuality, including key turning points in the conception of sexual morality and the law, including the rise of sexology, the Sexual Revolution, and the movement for LGBTQ+ rights with be addressed. Topics covered include: age and rites of passage, marriage, conception, birth, infanticide, the family, love, male and female homosexuality, women and property, and sex.
