Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the nature, scope, and scientific basis of exercise and sport science. The course is aimed at developing an understanding of the physiological adaptations to acute and long term physical training. An understanding of these adaptations is crucial for the physical educator, athletic trainer, coach, fitness expert, or exercise physiologist. Emphasis is placed on bioenergetics as well as circulatory, respiratory, and neuromuscular responses during rest, steady state, and exhaustive physical activity. An orientation to professional activities, opportunities, and competencies in the field will also be addressed. Applied aspects of exercise science will be introduced and practiced during the laboratory components of the course. Three hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week. Prerequisite: BIO 171.
