Cultural Foundations in Education provides students with a deep understanding of the historical, philosophical, and cultural foundations of education in the United States, with an emphasis on how these roots continue to shape today's schools, policies, and classrooms. Students will explore the meaning and purpose of education within local, national, and global contexts, examining how societal values, teacher identity, and cultural perspectives impact the educational experience. Through a social justice lens, students will engage in critical conversations around current educational issues- such as equity, access, inclusion, and culturally responsive practices. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the theoretical complexities of today's diverse classrooms. A 30-hour field-based observation in an approved PreK-12 setting is required, allowing students to connect theory to real-world applications. Prerequisite(s): PSY 204, PSY 207, or EDU 182.
