A focus on the fundamental properties and behavior of soils as engineering materials including the following topics: Introduction to the nature and origin of soil and rocks; engineering classification of soil; soil compaction; permeability and seepage; engineering behavior and properties of soils; compressibility; shear strength of soil; lateral earth pressure; and soil-bearing capacity for foundations. Also includes various laboratory tests to determine the characteristics and mechanical properties of soil according to the procedures and standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
