The history of the Russian Revolution and Stalinism; Russian autocracy, Grigori Rasputin and discrediting the monarchy; Revolutionary traditions and terrorism; the February and October Revolution; radical social and gender reforms; the rise of Stalin, his “Great Breakthrough” and collectiv- ization; purges and labor camps; the Great Patriotic War (World War Two); the origins of the Cold War; the postwar Russia, including the “Thaw,” Perestroyka, the return to autocratic political culture, and nostalgia over the empire.
