An introduction to women’s literary tradition from its emergence in the mid-nineteenth century through its current evolution. The study focuses on an evolving female aesthetic by examining recurring images, themes, and plots that emerge from women’s social, psychological, and aesthetic experiences. The content of the course varies and emphasizes such topics as American ethnic literature, Native American literature, or postcolonial literature. Dual-listed with ENGL 5563. (spring, even) 4013+ Literature for Adolescents 3 Considers the genre of adolescent literature as advocated and devel- oped by librarians focused on works that speak to children transitioning to adulthood; special attention is paid to questions of identity for young people who may not fi nd representations of themselves in the dominant culture. Course explores historical use of controversial social topics from the adolescent perspective, occasionally as explored through fantasy or science fi ction traditions, as well as how these books have historically appeared in (or been banned from) high school curriculum.
