Catalog description
The course is the fifth course in the Nursing sequence and focuses on providing comprehensive nursing care with emphasis on therapeutic communication to mental health clients. Nursing roles of being a provider and manager of care, communicator, teacher, and member of the profession are explored in caring for clients in various clinical sites. Students assess, develop, implement, and evaluate care plans that respect clients' cultural beliefs related to verbal and nonverbal behaviors and the part of the mental health-mental illness continuum that clients are experiencing. Sources of stress and coping among diverse (ethnic) cultural groups that may lead to violence, substance abuse, or altered life skills are considered in care planning. Nursing competencies are acquired in the skills lab with simulated learning experiences include high/low fidelity scenarios and virtual software. Clinical application of outcomes occurs in acute and community clinical sites.
