Catalog description

This course provides an introduction to the cultural, economic, and political history of modern Latin America, exploring the complex historical changes that occurred in Central and South America from European colonization to the present, focusing on the development of national systems of governance in the nineteenth century through to the pressures of globalization at the start of the twenty-first century. While emphasizing issues of cultural development and political economy via the exploration of specific case studies, the course is by nature interdisciplinary, with attention paid to social structures, art, literature, film, and cultural studies to build an appreciation for the interplay of scholarship throughout the social sciences and the humanities.
