History 106B analyzes the development of societies and interactions of cultures in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas from 1500 to the present, with an emphasis on their global interactions. The course focuses on trading networks; empires; colonization and decolonization; the rise of modern imperialism; capitalism and its opponents; urbanization and mass communication; technologies for war and peace; and calamities that have parallels with present day, including the impact of human settlement upon the natural world.
