This course explores books and other printed matter as material objects rather than neutral containers for texts, literally judging books by their covers, examining production, design, and materials as well as the myriad uses to which books been put in the world over the past two centuries. The course is embedded in the collections of OSU's Rare Books and Manuscripts Library.
