Chronic: Illness, Injury, and Disability in Modern History

This seminar explores the emergence of "chronic" - the disease category and the illnesses it names - over the course of the 20th century. We consider the political economic, environmental, and techno-social conditions that gave rise to chronic illness in modern history, and consider factors including public health policy, the pharmaceutical industry, activism, pop culture, and more. Prereq or concur: English 1110.xx, or GE foundation writing and info literacy course, or permission of instructor. Not open to students with credit for History 4706. Cross-listed in History.
