In America's age of mass incarceration, understanding how criminal law enforcement has and hasn't changed over time is crucial for reckoning with public safety challenges today. This course tracks the history of American policing from the 17th century to today and unearths crucial developments in the aftermaths of chattel slavery, Jim Crow segregation and late 20th - century Black freedom struggles.
