This course surveys the evolution of citizenship in the United States from the Revolutionary War through the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Students consider how individuals and groups outside positions of formal political power worked to expand or restrict who could claim citizenship, with special attention to the relationship between constitutional law and civil society.
