Catalog description

The goal of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental algorithms needed to understand and analyze genome-scale transcriptomics data sets, of the kind produced by (older) microarrays or (newer) RNA-Sequencing. The course will cover three major kinds of applications: Class Comparison, Class Discovery, Class Prediction. Students should have a broad overview of the field of bioinformatics, such as that provided in BMI 5730; a basic familiarity with statistical methods, such as those presented in BMI 5750; and a basic familiarity with the R statistical software environment, such as that presented in BMI 5750 (or should be willing to learn that material on their own).
