This course examines the aspects of technical operations management and how when applied effectively they can provide an organization with a product or service with higher quality and at a lower cost than their competition. Emphasis is on providing a conceptual understanding of the operations function, which includes: business measures, product/service design, capacity planning, facilities planning and layout, work system design, managing quality, materials planning and inventory control, supply chain management and automatic identification & data capture. Operations is an essential function in all organizations, manufacturing or service, private or public, profit or non-profit. Technical operations managers work in factories, sports facilities, restaurants, banks, hospitals and clinics, airlines, etc. Operations are typically, by far, the largest segment of an organization with the largest budget, number of employees and square footage in the facility. All other departments in organizations interact with and are affected by Operations. For these reasons it is important to understand the operations functions.
