Catalog description

This course explores the foundational movement vocabularies for jazz dance. Students investigate movement aesthetics and a range of stylistic qualities and cultural contexts, including the Africanist and Black Diasporic roots of jazz dance in the US, Broadway lineage, and codified techniques. Classes emphasize the development of technical proficiency, musicality, and expressive range within jazz dance cultural lineage. Students demonstrate basic jazz dance vocabulary, perform movement phrases, and engage critically through writing and discussion with the cultural significance of jazz dance.
