Reviews nervous system structure and chemical signaling pathways and then surveys the major classes of psychoactive drugs, including alcohol, opium, cocaine, amphetamines, nicotine, caffeine, marijuana, the hallucinogens, and the antidepressants. Particular attention is paid to the biological bases of their effects.
