In this art history survey class, students explore the interplay between their own cultural biases and global visual cultures. The course aims to provide a holistic understanding of different cultures by analyzing artworks and examining their historical, political, social, economic, and philosophical contexts. Emphasis is placed on understanding what art objects can say about the cultures in which they were created, and how objects that look similar might mean something very different if created in different times and cultures.The course fosters an understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of another culture in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, or beliefs and practices.
