Catalog description

This 50 hour clinical course provides opportunities to apply contemporary theory, research and evidence based practices in caring for individuals and families with mental health and social health challenges. Emphasizing a holistic, recovery oriented approach, students develop therapeutic use of self and implement nursing care grounded in relevant theoretical frameworks. Through supervised clinical experiences, students assess, plan, implement and evaluate person centered interventions for individuals with psychological issues, psychiatric disorders and co-occurring conditions. Students demonstrate clinical reasoning, ethical decision making, culturally and linguistically responsive communication and advocacy to support optimal outcomes and equitable access to care. The course emphasizes patient safety, harm reduction and respectful civil therapeutic relationships. Working collaboratively with interprofessional team members, students engage in practices that promote recovery, resilience and the prevention of violence, injury and workplace stress while advancing compassionate equitable mental health care. Restriction: Nursing, Junior or higher. Prerequisites: Grade of C+ or higher in all PY 220, NURS 206, NURS 206S, NURS 217, NURS 217L, NURS 217S. Corequisite: NURS 215. Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.
