Catalog description

This didactic course introduces contemporary theory, research and evidence based practices in mental health nursing. Emphasizing a holistic perspective, students explore therapeutic use of self and apply nursing knowledge grounded in relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks. Through lectures, discussions and case based learning, students analyze the assessment and care of individuals and families experiencing psychological issues, psychiatric disorders and social health challenges. Will develop clinical reasoning, ethical decision making and culturally and linguistically responsive communication skills to support safe, person centered care. The course emphasizes safety, harm reduction and respectful therapeutic and professional interactions. Examination of interprofessional collaboration and strategies to prevent violence, injury and workplace stress in mental health settings. Restriction: Nursing, Junior or higher. Prerequisites: Grade of C+ or higher in all PY 220, NURS 206, NURS 206S, NURS 217, NURS 217L, NURS217S. Corequisite: NURS 215L. Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.
