Pharmacology I

Catalog description

This course is an introduction to the science of Pharmacology. It is part 1 of II pharmacology courses, divided into body systems. The basic concept of pharmacology, such as drug testing and approval pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, therapeutic and toxic effects, dosage calculations, and challenges related to drug therapy, provide the foundation from which drug therapy associated with specific body systems can be addressed. A discussion of the major drug groups focuses on therapeutic actions and indications, pharmacokinetics, contraindications and cautions, adverse effects, clinically important drug-drug interactions, and nursing considerations, which emphasize the nursing process and highlight patient care and teaching. Prototypes of the major drug groups are emphasized. Students will demonstrate an understanding of lifespan considerations, evidence-based best practices, patient safety, and critical thinking that are integrated throughout the course. Focus will include a safe and patient-centered approach to nurse medication administration, as well as the mechanism of action, all within a legal/ethical framework. Prerequisite: Grade of C+ or higher in all of: HHPR 200, BI 215, BI 216. Restriction: Nursing majors. Offered: Fall, Spring, Summer.
