Nursing History and Health Promotion

Exploration of the history and evolution of nursing through the use of primary and secondary sources, simulations, discussion and research. Students examine the development of nursing as a profession from early origins to the present day, with attention to how historical, social, political, and economic contexts have influenced healthcare delivery, population health, and professional identity. The course highlights the nurse's role in health promotion, wellness, and disease prevention, connecting historical foundations to current evidence-based and person-centered practice. Through teacher and student-centered learning, students develop critical thinking and communication skills while apply historical inquiry to the study of nursing and public health. By exploring the effects of race, place, and professional identity on health outcomes, students analyze how nurses have historically advanced equity, safety, and quality improvement.
