Structures of Power

Catalog description

This course explores the interactions, conflicts and negotiations between institutions of power and the people who live under them. Students study key philosophical and sociological thinkers then consider how theories compare to the lived experiences of Berliners and the physical space of the city. Students are encouraged to think critically about social relations, dynamics of production and exchange and uses of urban space. Themes may include the politics of life and death, migration, racism, creative class, temporary uses of space, housing gentrification and urban management. Credit cannot be earned in both PO 300 and HI 361. Offered: Fall, Spring.
