Catalog description

Three decades of a devastating war, 1618-1648, claimed the lives of one-fourth of the population of central Europe and transformed the religious and political map of continents. The scale of the trauma, comparable to the World Wars and Holocaust of the 20th century, shaped the consciousness and subsequent development of European nations. This course will examine the revolutions in military technology and religious thought that fueled the conflict, study the events of the war as experienced by officers, soldiers, and civilians, and explore the lasting effects of the Treaty of Westphalia on the European state system. 3 Lecture hours. Prerequisite: C or higher in 200-level history course.
