Colonial America and the Atlantic World

With North America as its focal point, this course covers the themes and contours of the Atlantic World from 1500-1800, including empire, Native American history, the African Diaspora, piracy, and borderlands. Students will explore how the hybrid world that emerged in the wake of the European Age of Discovery gave rise to rigid identity categories such as race and nationality. Prerequisite: C or higher in one 200 level history course. Offered: Fall.
